Moving In & Out

Your New Home Awaits

Move-in day is your official launch into college life! It's a whirlwind of excitement (and maybe a few tears), but don't worry, we're here to make it smooth sailing. Our helpful staff and a welcoming atmosphere will get you settled in your new home-away-from-home. Get ready to meet your roommate, explore your residence hall, and start making memories that will last a lifetime!

On move-in day you'll find a bustle of activity both inside and outside our residence halls and apartments. Staff members will be all around campus to help things run as smoothly as possible, however there will be no assistance unloading vehicles. Think of move-in as a day-long experience. Chances are it will take quite a bit less, but it's important that you don't try to rush things. Generally the day goes smoothly, however, you should be prepared for unplanned events that might slow things down like traffic or weather conditions. Your patience and cooperation are important and appreciated.

If you're first to arrive, consider waiting for your roommate(s) before you rearrange the room. It's important that the room setup be a result of all occupants of the room rather than solely on the first to arrive. However, if you've talked with your roommate(s) in advance and agreed on a setup then go for it.

Before you arrive, familiarize yourself with the Guide to Campus Living (Bloomsburg | Lock Haven | Mansfield). This document contains information about the policies, procedures, staffing, facilities, campus safety and other information related to living on campus. As always, if you still have questions, just ask.

Move-In Schedule & Procedures

Move-in information will be posted at a later date.  Classes begin Monday, August 26, 2024.

Lock Haven new and returning students will receive an email from Housing and Residence Life with a link. You must use the link you receive to select a move-in timeslot on the days designated for their move-in:

  • New Students (first-year students and/or transfer students)
    • Move in on Thursday, August 22, and Friday, August 23, 2024
  • Returning Students (students who have already completed at least one semester at Lock Haven)
    • Move in Saturday, August 24, and Sunday, August 25, 2024

The Office of Housing and Residence Life reserves the right to adjust a student's time slot if necessary. If a new or returning student signs up for the wrong date, the initially scheduled time slot will be canceled, and the student will be contacted via Lock Haven email and asked to pick a new time. If a student needs to change a time slot, use the same link to cancel the original time and choose a new one. Students can schedule or reschedule their timeslot up to 24 hours before their chosen move-in day.

Please note: If you are part of a group moving in early, you do not have to use this link to sign up for a move-in time slot. Your group organizer or coach has already provided a complete list of who will move in early and when. You will receive a separate email from us confirming your early arrival move-in day and time. The following groups have been approved to move in early:

  • ASP students
  • Cheerleading
  • ACT 101 students
  • Field Hockey
  • Football
  • Global Honors
  • Band
  • Trio SSS students
  • Volleyball
  • Soccer
  • Cross Country

If your group is not listed above, please check with your group organizer or coach for verification. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate anyone not assigned to a specific group preapproved to move in early.

Pre-Move-In To-Do List

Before you arrive it's important that you communicate openly and honestly with your roommate(s). When housing assignments are released you'll have access to their basic information such as name, address, phone number and email address. Don't wait for your roommate(s) to contact you. Take the initiative and get in touch with them as soon as you can and discuss all aspects of living together including establishing boundaries and creating a roommate agreement. Make sure to talk about your hometowns, interests, families and of course, what you want to do at CU. Ask questions to find out what items each roommate is planning to bring to campus, what are your typical times to go to bed, how do you like to study and how clean do you keep your room. It is also important to think about and discuss how you would like to share things like TVs, gaming systems, computers and other items. Remember, open communication will allow you to create a mutually beneficial relationship and living environment.

We know social media can be a big part of student's lives and sometimes we look at people's profiles and make snap judgments about them. Treat your future roommate fairly and talk with them first. Don't allow what you might "perceive" on social media to influence your opinions. Please note, room changes will not be made based on your perception of a person's social media.

Bringing items that are not allowed on-campus can be frustrating for everyone. Be sure to review the list of what to bring and what's prohibited so you don't waste valuable car space with an item that you'll have to send back home. Staff will conduct safety inspections throughout the semester and any prohibited items found will be required to be removed.

Bloomsburg

On move-in day it's helpful if you are familiar with your surroundings. Often just visiting during an open house or orientation isn't sufficient to firmly know your surroundings. Visit the Office of Undergraduate Admissions' Visit Bloomsburg page where you can get to know our campus a little better. You can even download a campus map to help you find your way around.

Review your housing and meal plan information in MyHousing Self-Service.

If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact us at buhouse@commonwealthu.edu.

  • If you have a dolly or hand truck/cart it is a good idea to bring it. The University provides carts for residents to use for move in, but they are limited in number.
  • Check in during your assigned day/time. Residence Life has created a specific schedule for each hall to minimize the number of residents checking in at one time.
  • Vehicles will be directed to an unloading area near your residence. As soon as the vehicle is unloaded, you will be asked to move it to a designated location. It is imperative to move your vehicle so other residents can unpack. Apartment residents may park in the lots by your apartment.
  • Jessica Kozloff Apartments residents, please be aware that the apartment buildings do not have elevators.
What sheet size should I purchase?
  • A regular twin sheet set will fit over all of the mattresses on campus. Some halls do have long mattresses, but normal twin sheets will work. If you would like to add a thicker mattress pad or egg crate pad you might want to consider purchasing an extra-long sheet set.
How do I get a MicroFridge?
  • All lower campus residence hall rooms include a University provided MicroFridge. Students are not permitted to bring their own personal refrigerator when living in a residence hall.
  • Students living in apartment complexes may still have a personal refrigerator or MicroFridge if they so choose.
May I move in early?
  • Students are not permitted to move in before Friday, January 19.
Can I get a parking permit?

Lock Haven

If you will be moving to Commonwealth University’s Lock Haven campus for the first time, welcome! If you will be returning to campus, welcome back! Moving into your "home away from home" will be an exciting, hectic day. Below you will find instructions for both new and returning students. Please read this page carefully to ensure a smooth move-in experience. Regularly check your CU email to stay updated on important information and additional details.

When exiting Route 220, please use the Lock Haven exit, not the Mill Hall exit. The Lock Haven exit will place you in a better position to drive to the central check-in location. Once off the Lock Haven exit, follow signs for Water Street. This will bring you right to campus.

Central Check-In Location

  • When you arrive on campus, follow the signs to the Parsons Union Building (PUB) parking lot and the University Store.
  • Park your vehicle(s) and proceed towards the University Store entrance, where you will be checked into our housing software system, sign your Room Condition Report, receive your 30-minute unloading pass, and get your room and mailbox keys.

Vehicle Queue

  • After receiving your keys, return to your vehicle and follow the signs to the vehicle queue.
  • Pull your vehicle into the line designated for your residence hall to await your turn.
  • You will be directed to drive to your residence hall as soon as a space becomes available in your residence hall's unloading zone.

Unloading Your Vehicle

  • Drive to your residence hall’s designated unloading zone.
  • If you have more than one vehicle to unload, please drive only one vehicle to your residence hall at a time. Once you’ve finished unloading the first vehicle, you may park it back in the PUB parking lot and drive the second vehicle to your residence hall’s designated unloading zone.
  • Quickly unload your belongings from your vehicle onto the sidewalk. Plan to unload your belongings and move them to your room during your allotted parking time to help prevent traffic congestion.
  • One person should always stay with your vehicle until it is fully unloaded and moved to the proper parking location.
  • When your allotted unloading time is up, please move your vehicle to the designated parking lots.
  • Expect traffic on move-in days and plan accordingly. University Police will be directing traffic to designated parking locations for the day. Shuttles will bring drivers back to the residence halls.
  • Resident Assistants and volunteers will provide directions and assistance while you move in. You're welcome to bring family or friends to assist you. At this time, there is no limit to the number of helpers you may bring.
  • University carts and bins will be available to help you move your belongings. These are distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. You may be required to leave a valid means of identification, like a driver's license or student ID, to borrow a cart. Carts must be returned to the location you received them.
  • Move-In happens rain or shine. If it looks like rain, consider weather proofing items with trash bags and/or using plastic containers. It's a certainty that belongings will be exposed to the elements for a short period of time.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and shoes.
  • Don't forget to drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
  • Please take all trash to the dumpsters located at your residence hall. Recycle cardboard, plastic bottles, cans, and newspaper in the proper receptacles.

Visit the Housing at Lock Haven page for more information.

Where can I do my Laundry?

Smith Hall's laundry room is on the ground floor (below the first floor). In Campus Village, the laundry room is located in the adjacent lobby. Halls are not equipped with change machines, so plan to have quarters or pay electronically using Haven Dollars you preload onto your student ID.
