Senior discovers “pura vida” through study abroad

From white water rafting to zip lining through the rainforest, Kylie Goodling had the adventure of a lifetime while studying abroad in Costa Rica over winter break.

Goodling, a senior speech-language pathology major and Spanish and linguistics minor, was set on studying abroad for some time during her years at Bloomsburg University.

“I have always wanted to travel, and I figured studying abroad would be a great way to do so, and a good way to finish out my senior year and my Spanish minor,” Goodling explained.

Goodling’s original plan was to attend a faculty led trip to Spain, but the trip ended up getting cancelled. This did not stop her from pursuing her dream. Through research on the perfect program, price, and excursions, Goodling found a trip with SOL Education Abroad to Costa Rica.

During her time in Costa Rica, Goodling immersed herself deep into the culture and more importantly, explore. She was excited to talk about her trip to the rainforest where she zip lined through the trees on the pouring rain. She also spent time exploring the volcanos, hot springs, beaches and La Fortuna or as we know it, waterfalls. Activities such as dance and cooking classes were another way for Goodling to learn what daily life was like in Costa Rica.

“I have also learned to try new foods, no matter how they look because they might actually be good,” Goodling emphasized.

A large influencer on Goodling’s trip was her host mom, Mama Tica. Mama Tica had a big impact on Goodling and her roommate while they stayed in her home. The girls received advice about life after each meal from Mama Tica. Some of the lessons the girls took away from the post-dinner talks included: nothing is that important that it needs to consume your life, love yourself, and enjoy the life you were given.

“Pura Vida” or pure life is now one of Goodling’s philosophies she has applied to her life.

Goodling highly recommends other students should take the chance to study abroad. Through her trip, she has made new friendships, gained new knowledge, and learned to accept other cultures without judgment.
