Program Details
- Coursework – M.Ed. in Secondary Education with Teacher Certification Candidates are required to earn a minimum of 30 credits for M.Ed. degree completion. Upon review of transcripts and professional experiences, Teacher Certification Candidates may be required to take additional courses to meet the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) requirements/competencies for initial teaching certification. Therefore, Teacher Candidates may be required to take up to 42 graduate credits.
- Additional Preparation – Additionally, some undergraduate content courses may be required. However, Teacher Certification Candidates may qualify for initial teacher certification with a minimum of 12 credits completed with a B (3.0 GPA)
- Flexible Start Times – Students may apply for the Fall, Spring, or Summer semesters.

Year 1: Fall Semester
- EDUC 522 Principles & Structures in PK12 Education (3 credits)
- EDUC 534 Connecting Research and Classroom Practice (3 credits)
- ELL 515, ELL 525, or ELL 532 (3 credits)
Year 1: Spring Semester
- EDUC 558 Assessment and Differentiation for Inclusive Classrooms (3 credits)
- MSED 562 Internship in Education (3 credits)
- EDUC 574 Classroom Management and Effective Discipline (3 credits)
- Secondary Methods (MSED 553, 575, 585 or 590) (3 credits)
Year 2: Fall Semester
- MSED 598 Middle and Secondary Level Student Teaching I (6 credits)
- EDL 590 Research in Education (3 credits)
Year 2: Spring Semester
- SPE 520 Data Driven Interventions for Individuals with Exceptionalities (3 credits)
- SPE 530 Methods of Instruction for Individuals with Exceptionalities (3 credits)
- EDUC 546 Teaching in Diverse Contexts or ELL 520 (3 credits)
- SPE 510 Introduction to Individuals with Exceptionalities (3 credits)
Applicants must satisfy the admission requirements for the School of Graduate Studies. In addition, you must:
- Submit an online application and application fee.
- Send official college transcripts.
- Schedule an interview with the program coordinator to clarify program requirements, discuss goals, evaluate academic records, and outline a long-range program.
Students who do not meet the minimum admission requirements may be admitted non-degree upon the approval of the Graduate Advisory Board. The non-degree designation must be eliminated after completion of 12 semester hours in which a QPA of 3.0 or better is earned. No Cs may be earned during this period.
