The Curriculum & Instruction (non-certification): Alternative Education program is designed for teachers and administrators who are interested in supporting at risk students in becoming successful in the classroom.

As a 100% online program, the Alternative Education program is a nationwide leader in providing coursework for teachers in need of that extra professional edge in working with challenging students. The program examines pedagogical practice, leadership, curriculum and program methods, and teaching & learning classroom environments. The C&I-Alt Ed program supports teachers who are working toward their permanent certification, administrators who are earning professional development credit, and individuals from business and other backgrounds that wish to provide leadership in education classrooms. The courses are aligned with the core propositions of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION/INNOVATIVE INSTRUCTION CORE COURSEWORK:

A 30 credit hour program, feedback from graduates consistently indicates how valuable the courses were in their day-to-day work with students. We often hear from teachers- I was able to take what I learned in the classroom last week and use it with my students this week!

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and decisions are rendered after the receipt of all admissions documents.

To complete the admissions procedure, students must meet the following criteria;

  1. Have a 3.0 undergraduate GPA.
  2. Submit a statement of professional goals.
  3. Submit 3 letters of recommendation.
  4. Submit a resume.
  5. Submit scores on the PRAXIS in your subject matter field or GRE or GMAT scores or teaching
  6. credential.
  7. Schedule an interview with the program coordinator to clarify program requirements, discuss goals, evaluate academic records, and outline a long-range program.

TRANSFER CREDITS

Students may transfer up to nine credits of graduate work from an accredited institution toward the Elective Requirements of the Master of Education program.  All transfer credits must be approved by the Program Coordinator.

Teachers working in today’s classrooms must be highly skilled and innovative educators. By completing the Master of Education Curriculum Instruction (non-certification) Alternative Education degree you will be better prepared to:

  • Work with the most challenging of students in a school district or other setting
  • Develop and implement plans to meet student-learner needs
  • Develop methods for working with students to create a safe and challenging learning environment that focuses on teaching and learning
  • Understand the relationship between theory and practice in working with students.
  • Provide school-wide leadership on at-risk student issues
  • Work with students across many academic and developmental levels by differentiating curriculum, assessment, and instruction.
  • Understand and work with specialized educational needs, motivational challenges, disruptive behaviors, and conduct disorders.

Online Coursework with On-Site Supervision

This program is designed for teachers, social workers, counselors, and administrators in alternative settings, correctional settings, urban schools, and regular education settings.

Strong Curriculum

Courses include a combination of theory and practice, with a focus upon building knowledge and skills relevant to daily classroom challenges.

Facilities

Programs delivered either partially or entirely remotely may utilize either synchronous or asynchronous technologies. Synchronous delivery utilizes the Zoom platform and may utilize either or both the Zoom desktop or mobile applications or purpose-built Zoom classrooms. Asynchronous delivery utilizes the Desire2Learn Brightspace learning management system and the SonicFoundry Mediasite media delivery platform.
