PSYC 441: Theory and Practice of Academic Psychology explores pedagogical techniques that are supported as effective for teaching psychology in the college classroom. The course also focuses on career development, preparation for graduate school, and professional responsibilities in academia. As an experiential component, students in the class serve as teaching assistants for the mass-enrollment PSYC 100: Introduction to Psychology course. In this role, they practice presenting course content, plan and facilitate review sessions, and hold a weekly student consultation hour to support the Intro Psych students' success.

My words of encouragement to new students are that it is 100% ok to not know what you want to do with your career when you are beginning college. Try to focus on things you find interesting and start from there! Explore through your coursework and find in a major you find interesting.

My favorite thing about Bloomsburg is the people. I have made some really good friends here and it's a beautiful campus, especially in the fall. One thing I love about the discipline of psychology is how many different paths there are to explore in the field.

If there was one piece of advice I could give to a new student at Bloomsburg, it’s to say yes to things as much as you can (while balancing priorities), and to be kind and friendly to everyone. As a student-athlete on the Volleyball team, I would also say that to balance schedules and stay on top of classwork it is exponentially easier when you write things down. Taking notes by hand and writing my “to-do list” in a planner with my schedule has saved me so many times.

My favorite thing about Bloomsburg is the friends I made here—the people really make the place. I love being a Psychology major because so many of the concepts and theories you learn are found in your everyday life. The brain is such a complex system, and I love learning about how we think.

My advice to new students is to not be afraid to try to pick up another major or a minor (or two)! This allows you to focus elective credits on something you enjoy and/or are curious about and get some specialized knowledge and credentials.
The CU-Bloomsburg campus just feels so cozy and serene due to its small, tight-knit community and nature-surrounded location. I like being a psychology major at CU-Bloomsburg because the whole department of professors are great professional role models that care deeply about their student’s success and academic growth.

Career Goal: Age-related Neurodegenerative Disease support services, Palliative Care
My advice to new students is to have an open mind about what degree you would like to pursue, the one you go into college with might not be the one you graduate with. As a psychology major, there has not been a psychology class that I haven’t enjoyed. The discipline is fascinating.

My favorite thing about Bloomsburg is the professors. I have had so many classes I truly enjoyed, not just because of the content but because of how engaged and passionate my professors were! I also really love how pretty the campus is in the fall.
As a Psychology Major, I love learning about common behavior patterns, discovering the motivations for why we act the way we do, and learning how similar we all actually are. It is really cool to learn theories and concepts in class and then be able to recognize and see how they play out in real life.
Emma Pick
Major: Psychology

Career Goal: Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
The transition to college can be really hard. My advice to incoming students is to allow yourself to feel the weight of it but keep putting one foot in front of the other because you are growing and learning every day. When you are feeling confused or discouraged, reach out to professors for help and encouragement. I LOVE the people in the Psychology department at CU-Bloomsburg. I have enjoyed being with peers and professors who share the same passions as I do.
Raegan Smith
Major: Psychology
Minor: Social Work and Child Welfare

My advice to new students is to ask all the questions! I would not have the relationships I do now with professors in the psychology department if I never asked for advice or help. Don’t be afraid to be noticed, recognized, and heard!
As a psychology student, I love learning how our brain and its different structures are connected to every behavior and mental process. It is so interesting to be able to understand why people behave the way they do and how these processes take place every day of our lives.
