By uniting real-world experience with academic knowledge, Kristie Byrum delivers the best of both worlds to business and academia. After more than 20 years in private enterprise serving as public relations counselor, agency owner, and corporate communications executive, Byrum re-entered the classroom to pursue a PhD in rhetorics, communication and information design from Clemson University. With her research on the intersection of communication and corporate social responsibility, Byrum offers further insights to the evolving strategic communications profession.
A recognized entrepreneur, she founded several businesses, including three public relations agencies and a venture-funded dot-com company. Starting as a daily newspaper journalist, Byrum then entered the public relations field and earned APR accreditation in 2003. She holds a BA in Journalism from The Pennsylvania State University and an MA in Journalism from the University of South Carolina. She currently serves as co-chair a national PRSA Committee, focusing on the inclusion of communications curriculum in MBA programs nationwide.
Dr. Byrum is the faculty advisor for the Bloomsburg University Chapter of the PRSSA and an active PRSA member, serving the organization on a national basis. A PRSA member since 1997, Dr. Byrum earned her APR accreditation in 2003 and has been reaccredited four times. For PRSA national, Dr. Byrum serves as the MBA Program Research Chair, evaluating the teaching outcomes of strategic communications curriculum in masters’ of business administration programs nationwide. She is a current member of the PRSA Educators Academy and the Central PA Chapter of PRSA, where she serves as the Public Service co-chair. She is a former member of the PRSA Counselor’s Academy, the South Carolina Chapter of PRSA, and previously served as the professional advisor for the Clemson University PRSSA Chapter.
