Out in the Margins Guidelines

Marginality, as bell hooks wrote, is ‘more than a site of depravation...It is also the site of radical possibility, a space of resistance...It offers to one the possibility of radical perspective from which to see and create, to imagine alternatives, new worlds.’

Commonwealth University – Bloomsburg Campus invites artists from historically underrepresented groups, including but not limited to disabled artists, LGBTQ+ artists, BIPOC artists, and artists from other marginalized backgrounds, to submit artwork that critically engages with how location within the margin acts as a catalyst to envision a radical new world. Additionally, we encourage artwork that considers the aesthetic use of margins within artworks – how they can be a source of innovation, subversion, and unique perspectives that challenge conventional notions of beauty and composition.

Submission Guidelines:

  1. Eligibility: This national call for proposals is open to all artists who identify as marginalized, including but not limited to BIPOC artists, LGBTQ+ artists, disabled artists, and artists from other underrepresented backgrounds.
  2. Artistic Medium: We welcome proposals for a wide range of artistic mediums, including but not limited to painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, digital art, and performance art. Collaborative projects are also encouraged. All work must fit through a standard single doorway.
  3. Submission: Please submit a single pdf document which includes the following:
    1. Up to three images including title, date, medium, and dimensions
      • Optional detail shot for each image may be included.
      • Specify any special requirements for installing your work. o A brief artist statement (250 words maximum)
