Lura Good Brings New Voice to Campus Media as Confer Center Director

Radio has a new voice on Commonwealth University-Bloomsburg’s campus. Lura Good, a veteran on-air personality for Selinsgrove-based Hanna Radio (92.3-97.5-106.1 FM) has been appointed Director of the Kerby Confer Media Center.  

The Kerby Confer Media Center was established with a $5.3 million gift from radio legend Kerby Confer. The center's home will be in McCormick Center, currently undergoing renovation, and will encompass interactive collaboration spaces where students and faculty can explore radio, video, podcasts, live-streaming, and other forms of broadcasting on campus.  

“Going on air is a privilege. You are being invited into a person’s life,” says Good. “Radio is where you connect to someone personally. You become part of their routine and you get to be a storyteller.” 

A graduate from Bucknell University with a master’s degree in higher education and curriculum development, Good recalls how radio was a part of her routine as a listener. “When I was working as a teacher in New York, I knew I was running late in the morning if I missed the birthdays on the radio.”  

She finds it interesting how audio is being used in new forms, excited to work with students and explore all mediums of broadcasting.  

“I fell into radio by accident,” Good admits. “A friend worked at one of the local radio stations.” She then became a promotions assistant with the station and gradually transitioned to on-air roles.   

Good currently has her own show at WHNA, Hanna Radio, part of Seven Mountains Media, and a podcast, The 57Oh!. She has also served as Promotions Director and morning show co-host at the crosstown Sunbury Broadcasting Hot AC “94KX” WQKX Sunbury radio station in the past.  

Good’s commitment to community extends beyond the airwaves. She holds a Walk for Hunger with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, where she walks from Selinsgrove to Bloomsburg with an empty shopping cart to spread awareness and raise money for the people who go hungry during the holiday season. She has raised just over $14,000 in the past, with each dollar feeding someone in need. With a colleague, Good also has launched a weekly feature, “Four-Legged Friend Fridays,” to help find homes for adoptable animals.   

She plans to expand the curriculum around the media and journalism program to use the Kerby Confer Media Center to the fullest.

Good also wants students to branch out and explore all the opportunities held in the new media center, including CU-Bloomsburg’s own station, Husky Student Radio (WHSK). “Radio is a community resource. I want students to think of WHSK as a community resource,” Good says. “Right now, radio is a club on campus. But in the future, it will be part of the curriculum.”
