The Commonwealth University-Lock Haven men's and women's basketball programs hosted an alumni weekend in February, culminating in the 10th annual Night at the Races fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 15. The event brought together former players, coaches and supporters who returned to The Haven to celebrate the past, present and future of Lock Haven basketball.
The day began on the court, as both the women's and men's teams secured victories over Shepard University. The women kicked off the action with a 71-60 win; the men followed it up with a 67-62 victory of their own.
Following the games, the celebration continued into the night with the 10th annual Night at the Races fundraiser, a derby-style tradition where alumni and supporters placed bets on simulated horse races while enjoying food, drinks and socializing. The event serves as a crucial fundraiser for both basketball programs, with most of the proceeds directly supporting the teams.
Along with former men's and women's basketball alumni in attendance, a key contributor to the fundraiser are alumni from the fraternity Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE). Although TKE no longer has an active chapter at Lock Haven, TKE alumni, mainly from the 1970s, continue to be major supporters of the university, and annual participants at Night at the Races. The generosity displayed from all alumni in attendance helps the basketball programs continue to thrive, providing resources for scholarships, equipment and team travel.
"We've been hosting Night at the Races for 10 years, and it typically generates over $5,000 per event," said women's head basketball coach Jennifer Smith. "The financial and participatory support from our alumni means everything - It shows their commitment to the success of our programs and our student-athletes."
"The best part about Night at the Races is the opportunity to reconnect with former players and long-time supporters," she added. "It's a night filled with reminiscing, sharing stories and feeling the strong sense of community that makes Lock Haven basketball special. It helps us build for the future while honoring the past."
