Keuka College welcomed Angel Schoonover as its first graduate athletic training intern for the spring 2022 semester. She embraced the rural campus as she grew up on a farm in Woodhull, New York, and graduated from Jasper-Troupsburg High School in 2014.

Schoonover came to the sports medicine team having completed a bachelor’s degree in biology from Houghton College in 2017 and an associate degree for physical therapist assistant from Penn State Mont Alto in 2019.

While in pursuit of her undergraduate degrees, Schoonover played intercollegiate basketball and soccer. She is determined to maintain her athletic status so that the patients in her care can see that she has walked in their shoes. She now enjoys endurance running and has finished six half marathons while in pursuit of her graduate degree. She graduated with a Master of Science in Athletic Training from Lock Haven University this spring and passed her national Board of Certification exam prior to graduation.

Having worked throughout New York and Pennsylvania, Schoonover notes that the athletes at Keuka were the most respectful of any she has worked with thus far and truly feels it a pleasure to have been a part of their sports medicine team.

Keuka’s Athletic Training staff is second to none. Assistant athletic trainers Geena Flickner ATC and Phil Rahr ATC offer cutting-edge knowledge in concussion management. They have greatly helped Schoonover refine her skill set and take an active lead in formulating her own clinical practice. Keuka’s head athletic trainer, Jeff Bray ATC, offers 30 years of experience spanning from time working in the NFL, NASCAR, Indy Car Racing and professional bull riding.

Having had this team of elite professionals as her guide, Schoonover has not only been exposed to the day-to-day operations of a multi-faceted sports medicine program, but to the administrative side of the organization as well.

“This unique hands-on experience has greatly prepared me for entering the workforce upon graduation and I am so grateful for my collegiate career to have begun here,” Schoonover said. “I will now finish in the Empire 8 Conference.”

Schoonover thanks the Keuka College community for welcoming her into the Wolfpack.
