Karen Oltra, ’89, majored in Elementary Education at Bloomsburg, but has spent much of her career in Human Resources. Now, Oltra is responsible for hiring fellow Huskies, Mounties, and Bald Eagles as Talent Acquisition Manager Luzerne County Head Start, Inc. She recently attended the Education Career Expo as part of the university-wide Collaborating to Assist Teacher Hiring (CATCH) Conference.
“The students who attended the Career Expo were impressive, said Oltra. “A few of them student taught at various locations of Head Start, and we find their skillset to be on par with our standards.”
Oltra was not surprised by the preparation the candidates showed in their interactions. She remembers utilizing her El Ed experiences in different roles throughout her career in HR.
“My years at Bloomsburg were a great experience. I learned a lot and have applied those skills to my current and past jobs,” said Oltra. “[Likewise], the quality of the students today is exceptional.”
Oltra added that other employers would find it well worth the time to attend recruiting events on campus.
“The students genuinely showed interest, came well-prepared, and asked good questions,” concluded Oltra. “Luzerne County Head Start values our partnership with Commonwealth University.”
