MANSFIELD, Pa. – More than 50 members of the Class of 1972 recently returned to Mansfield University to reconnect and to celebrate their 50th reunion.
Former MU President Rod Kelchner, who was actively involved with the Class of 1972 as Dean of Students at the time, joined the luncheon to reconnect with his former and forever students.
The Class enjoyed a memorable weekend that began at the New West Restaurant and Lounge and closed on-campus with an evening of dinner, dancing, and many laughs. The Class also presented the university with a class gift during the Society of Honors Luncheon.
Gabriel “Gabe” Alessi, Chair of the 1972 Golden Class Reunion, said the class gift discussion began nearly four years ago. After two years of a pandemic, the committee officially formed and began raising funds less than a year ago.
The Class of 1972 was determined to choose a path that would make a difference for students at their beloved alma mater. After exploring multiple projects with then alumni director, Casey Wood, the committee chose to cultivate support for general academic scholarships at Mansfield University. The committee knew that investing in students would immediately and positively impact their university while providing much-needed resources for so many Mansfield Mountaineers.
Having been students when the struggle for civil rights and political activism peaked, the Class of 1972 developed a sense of pride and determination that has carried them through the last 50 years. This determination continues today.
The Class is determined to reach its goal of $50,000 in support of student scholarships, raising more than $14,000 to date. “We have a long way to go, but we are determined to get there,” said Chairperson Alessi. The ’72 campaign in support of student scholarships will remain active until June 30.
“On behalf of Mansfield University, we thank the Mansfield State College Class of ’72 for choosing this pathway in honor of their 50th reunion,” said Executive Director of Advancement Casey Wood. “Supporting scholarship growth at ones beloved Alma Mater is both a generous and admirable act.”
