This month, we are thrilled to honor Dan Cruttenden—a 1973 graduate of Commonwealth University-Lock Haven and past president of the Lock Haven Alumni Association—as our July Volunteer of the Month.

Cruttenden’s commitment to student engagement and his unwavering dedication to giving back to his alma mater make him a shining example of Bald Eagle pride and support.

Volunteerism and Impact
Cruttenden participated at the Success in 60 speed networking event, held at CU-Lock Haven in March. His years-long volunteerism was originally sparked by friends who were already actively giving back to The Haven. He recognized that he could offer valuable insight and guidance to students pursuing careers in education.

Reflecting on his most memorable experience as an alumni volunteer, Cruttenden proudly highlights his tenure as a member and president of the Lock Haven Alumni Association’s board of directors. This role allowed him to shape the alumni community and strengthen the bond between the university, its graduates, and current students.
Impressions and Insights

At the March 7 Success in 60 event Cruttenden was deeply impressed by the aspiring educators he met. His positive interactions with students reaffirmed his belief in the value of alumni engagement.

"The students were focused and had a clear vision of the direction they were pursuing for their future," said Cruttenden. "It was enlightening to see their enthusiasm and passion for the education."

Encouragement for Fellow Alumni
To fellow alumni who are considering volunteering, Cruttenden offers enthusiastic encouragement that captures the rewarding alumni experience of guiding and supporting the next generation of Bald Eagles.

"It's a joy to speak with these young people. They are intent on listening to any advice that may help them move forward in life,” he said. “Giving them positive direction and encouragement can be a huge plus for them."

A Legacy of Preparation and Confidence
Cruttenden’s time as a Lock Haven student was transformative. He praises the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, and Lock Haven for its exceptional teacher education program that he says equipped him with the confidence and knowledge to excel as an educator.

"It was four of the best years of my life," he fondly recalls.

This strong foundation has inspired him to give back and help current students achieve their professional goals.
Continued Commitment to Giving Back

Beyond his volunteer work, Cruttenden is proud to be brother of Lock Haven’s Kappa Delta Rho fraternity, and an honorary brother of Tau Kappa Epsilon. These groups continue to support Lock Haven students through generous scholarships, and other financial and volunteer contributions, exemplifying the spirit of community and giving that he is so honored to be a part of.
Cruttenden's dedication to student engagement and his passion for giving back to Lock Haven students serve as an inspiration to the entire Lock Haven alumni network. The Haven Family is grateful for his support of the university, and looks forward to seeing the continued positive impact of alumni like Cruttenden on students' lives.
