The biggest Big Event of them all

More than 2,100 volunteers tackling nearly 200 jobs turned the seventh annual Big Event the largest one yet.
Sponsored by the Community Government Association, the single-day community service event gives students the opportunity to say “thank you” to Bloomsburg area residents and show appreciation for the community we live, learn, and work in.
First time Big Event volunteers, Keara Hepler and Jenna Hawkins were grateful to have the opportunity to give back to the community.
Keara Hepler volunteered with the Campus Crusade for Christ club on campus. The club’s job was to dig out a bank for fireplace for a family that was unable to do it themselves due to injury.
“I love the Big Event, because it is a day where everyone simply comes together to help out the community that we are so lucky to get to be a part of everyday,” Hepler said.
Jenna Hawkins volunteered with the Bloomsburg University Women’s Soccer team and together the team worked to clean up club soccer fields by Bloomsburg High School.
“It’s neat to see all aspects of Bloomsburg come together, from athletics to Greek Life to clubs, and help the community and more importantly the environment,” Hawkins said.
President John Caserta and the rest of CGA members started preparation for the Big Event last fall and didn’t stop until the night before of the event.
“On the day of the event all the puzzle pieces are in place, so the day is smooth sailing,” Caserta said.
CGA is proud of the work the students accomplished and can’t wait for an even bigger turn out next year.
