Accounting student selected for prestigious workshop

Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania accounting major Erica Morales from Easton is one of just 200 students nationwide selected for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Accounting Scholars Leadership Workshop. The three-day event is designed to help accounting students from racial and ethnic minorities develop their leadership ability with the ultimate goal of increasing diversity and inclusion in public accounting. 

The workshop, typically held in New Orleans, will be virtual this year from Oct. 13 to 15, due to COVID-19.

Attendees will participate in learning sessions and panel discussions covering a wide array of topics, such as developing leadership skills and passing the CPA exam. Students will have the opportunity to interact with accomplished CPA professionals who will share priceless knowledge regarding career opportunities in accounting and the value of networking.

“I was extremely excited when I found out I was accepted into the workshop,” said Morales. “I couldn't believe that I was one of those selected and feel extremely proud of myself for taking the chance and applying.” 

BU faculty member Joan McDonald encouraged Morales to put in an application.

“In the spring, I saw that the AICPA was accepting applications for the 2021 workshop and I immediately thought of Erica,” said McDonald. “I encouraged her to apply and offered to write a letter of recommendation. She has an exceptional work ethic and a very positive attitude. Being selected for the workshop is quite an honor and will be a great addition to her already impressive résumé.” 

Morales is a first-generation college student and has served as an officer in the Accounting Association since her freshman year. She has volunteered at a soup kitchen; has spent her winter and summer breaks working, including an internship at a CPA firm this summer, and is a Community Assistant at BU.  

Even with the workshop being held virtually, Morales plans on taking full advantage of the opportunity.

“I hope to strengthen my networking skills and learn more about the CPA exam,” said Morales. “Plus, I am looking forward to hearing the panelists speak about their experiences within the accounting profession and hear their advice on career progression.”

Morales has already thought about her future after she graduates next May.    

“My plan is to get my master's degree in accountancy here at Bloomsburg, then I want to pass the CPA exam and work at a public accounting firm.
