2 Lock Haven faculty accepted into AASCU Global Civic Literacy initiative

Dr. Gerard Martorell, Lock Haven University Business and Computer Science Department, and Dr. Steven Granich, Social Work and Counseling Department, have applied for and been accepted into the American Association of State Colleges and Universities' (AASCU) Global Civic Literacy initiative.

The grant-funded initiative aims to increase students' knowledge of global society and help them understand how global issues influence the lives of everyday citizens.

Using the Council on Foreign Relations' "World 101" curriculum, the Global Civic Literacy project webpage https://world101.cfr.org/ offers on curricular and co-curricular programming to build global literacy.

The selective global civic literacy project makes Lock Haven University one of 20 institutions worldwide chosen from among AASCU's membership to take part.

Based on The Council on Foreign Relations and National Geographic's 2016 survey, Martorell and Granich developed an updated survey instrument that will be used in a diversity of courses across Lock Haven, Bloomsburg, Georgia Gwinnett College and Georgia College and State University. The intention is to compare the 2022 and 2016 results - between the beginning of this spring semester and the end, and between the different universities participating in the project.

" 'What College Students Know About the World,' demonstrates a critical gap between what students know and what they need to know to succeed as informed and engaged citizens" Martorell said. "The LHU community as a whole will benefit because the goal is to embed global literacy both inside and outside the classroom."
